There's been much ado with who would helm the third installment of the newest Star Wars canon but it now appears that J.J. Abrams is the man who will take the chair to direct. Abrams shepherded the 2015 holiday hit, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac starring, grossing more than $2 billion dollars among its accolades.
STAR WARS: EPISODE IXTHE ACCLAIMED FILMMAKER WILL RETURN TO HELM THE FINAL FILM IN THE SEQUEL TRILOGY.
J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.
“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.
Colin Trevorrow and Rian Johnson were both hopefuls to direct the film before departing. Johnson currently helms the forthcoming release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opens on December 15 with Mark Hamill and Adam Driver also starring.

The ninth Star Wars film will release on May 24, 2019 December 20, 2019, according to Deadline.
