'True Blood' Actress Kelly Overton To Star In VAN HELSING For SYFY

In an update since last November's news of a female-led Van Helsing for Syfy, actress Kelly Overton (Tekken, HBO series True Blood, TNT series Legends) is being reported as the chosen lead. Overton, who shared the following artwork on Twitter on Wednesday, joins a slate of other names among the cast just announced today for the production ahead of its start on February 22 in Vancouver, B.C. in Canada.

Van Helsing centers on Vanessa Helsing, the daughter of famous vampire hunter and Dracula nemesis Abraham Van Helsing. She is resurrected five years in the future to find out that vampires have taken over the world and that she possesses unique power over them. She is humanity's last hope to lead an offensive to take back what has been lost.
Rounding out the current cast are as follows: Jonathan Scarfe as Axel, a devoted career marine loyal to his duty and his wards despite years of isolation and endless vampire attacks; Christopher Heyerdahl as Sam, a survivor of the vampire takeover who relies on his own skill and cunning to stay alive; Paul Johansson as Dmitri, a patient and calculating leader of the vampires who was turned before the rising; David Cubitt as John, another survivor driven by a cocktail of anger, unyearning suspicion and prejudice; Tim Guinee as Ted, a vampire foot soldier with a tragic past who eventually does battle with Vanessa.

via Deadline:
“We’ve been extremely blessed to get such a wonderfully talented and diverse cast for Van Helsing,” said writer/showrunner LaBute. Added Chad Oakes, Co-Chairman of Nomadic Pictures, “Kelly will be an amazing Vanessa and our lead cast is nothing short of outstanding.”
Hell On Wheels helmer Michael Nankin is first on the list to direct his share of the 13-episode slate next to Jason Priestley (Haven), David Frazee (Orphan Black), Simon Barry (Continuum) and Amanda Tapping (The Magicians). Neil LaBute (Your Friends & Neighbors, The Shape of Things) will serve as writer/showrunner for a hopeful Fall 2016 premiere.
