J.J. Abrams's STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Hits A Billion, Breaks Records Two Weeks In A Row

We are now two weeks into the release of J.J. Abrams's Star Wars: The Force Awakens and there's no kidding among anyone even before today who has stated this as the biggest movie in the world, even amid some early skepticism about the film's box office results. On Sunday in a move that was nothing short of an obvious truth, news broke that the new movie has earned a global estimate of $286.8 million globally ($153.5 million domestically and $133.3 million overseas) to officially hit $1.090 billion in 12 days, essentially beating out Universal Pictures's Jurassic World which did it in 13.

The news comes following the film's exceptional list of record-breaking milestones since last week's galas upon the film's December 18 premiere. Such figures include biggest Thursday preview gross ($57 million); biggest Friday, opening, and single day ($119.1 million)biggest Sunday ($60.5 million), Monday ($40.1 million), Tuesday ($37.3 million), and Christmas Day ($49.3 million), along with biggest IMAX debut and second weekend debut, essentially averaging well over $100 million a day since its release.

For this, it's safe to say that the film is success despite any worries anyone might have; a billion dollars should actually settle said worries as null and void. However, it's said that Disney still has its hopes set on breaking James Cameron's record for Avatar which still stands at $2.78 billion since 2009, and with the film having just had its red-carper premiere in China’s ahead of its wider open January 9, time will tell if the prospects are there, and really it is difficult to argue against. The force is certainly strong with this movie, as is the cash. (Thanks, Simon for that last zinger!)
