AMC Presents The Newer (Shorter) TV Spot For MORTAL KOMBAT LEGACY Season 2

Long before work officially kicks off for the feature film, writer and director Kevin Tancharoen cranks up the loyal fanbase once again with the new trailer for season 2 of Mortal Kombat Legacy via AMC, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Unlike season one, which debuted in 2012, season 2 will place more focus on the impending tournament that will see Earth's heroes take on Shang Tsung and the minions of Outworld.

The new season will feature a mixture of old and new characters. Cary Tagawa will return in a celebratory revival of the villainous soul-snatching sorcerer, Shang Tsung, who he played in the 1995 feature film from New Line Cinema. Actor Ian Anthony Dale and actress/martial arts stunt performer Samantha Jo will reprise their roles as Scorpion and Kitana, respectively, in addition to new cast members since season one, including Casper Van Dien as Johnny Cage, Dave McInnis as Raiden, Eric Jacobus as Stryker, Eric Steinberg as Sub-Zero and Michelle Lee as Mileena. New characters will include Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kenshi, Kuai Liang and Ermac, portrayed by Brian Tee, Mark Dacascos, Daniel Southworth, Harry Shum Jr. and Kim Do Nguyen.

The first trailer for the second season has garnished well over 4.5 million views since it premiered via the Streamy Awards hosted by Chris Hardwick, and on Machinima's YouTube channel back in February the same evening. Sunday's new TV trailer is a shorter version of February's much longer trailer.

The new season is produced by Bandito Brothers, along with Hayden Roush and Marina Stabile, based on script by Josh Baizer and Marshall Johnson. Larnell Stovall, whose previous works have included Mortal Kombat Legacy Season One, Bunraku, Undisputed 3: Redemption and the upcoming Ernie Barbarash actioner, Favela, served as the action choregrapher. Check back for a broadcast date for MK Legacy 2.

Mike Möeller Lands A Knockout Blow To North America This Summer With ARENA OF THE STREET FIGHTER

It was around the German release of the 2005 action film, Kampfansage that that I started expanding my taste in martial arts cinema a little more. It was the first time I took notice of action stars Mathis Landwehr and Volkram Zschiesche, and some of the brightest talent working under them in their field, including martial arts action performer, stuntman and actor Mike Möeller.

I have seen Mike's 2010 and 2013 reels a few times, and I am even more delighted now to see that what I am seeing in them is finally making its way to North America on DVD, with the release of the multi-award winning martial arts action revenge thriller from Generation X Group Film- & Medienproduktion, Arena Of The Street Fighter (previously released as Urban Fighter a.k.a. "Street Gangs"). The film also happens to be Mike's directorial debut, and is being celebrated by some of the best of the best in the martial arts action film industry, including Eric Karson, Isaac Florentine, and Don "The Dragon" Wilson, with its lead actor and director Mike Möeller, emerging through the hype as Germany's answer to Jet Li and Tony Jaa.

That's a big standard to set from the greats of action cinema. And without question, if I were you, I would take their word for it!

The film's cast sees Mike reuniting with Landwehr and Zschiesche, along with Oliver Juhrs and Nico Sentner who also served as co-executive producers. The film also stars Michael Bornhütter, Eskindir Tesfay, Michael Braun, Steffen Jung, Alessandro Janus, Najely Chumana and Sigo Heinsich.

With any luck, the film will be granted a North American release in early June. Until then, be sure to visit Möeller's official website and follow the film on Facebook as well.

The vicious and blood thirsty "Slater" runs the most violent gang in the land. There are those who dare not to join gangs, like Mike and his friends. But when Mike's brother is killed; he will fight to take vengeance on those who killed him & end their reign of violence in "Arena of the Street Fighter".

Director Sion Sono To Direct Live Action TOKYO TRIBES Movie

Indiewire is reporting via the Anime News Network that Japan is taking steps to bring "Tokyo Tribe 2" to the big screen. Director Sion Sono, who is said to be something of a controversial filmmaker is helming the project.

The film will be based on a series of graphic novels published since 1993 by author Santa Inoue, which were later adapted into a 13-part TV series.

I have not had the chance to see any of Sono's films just yet. However, based on what I read in the report, and in other reports, the manga does not sound too far off from what the award-winning filmmaker and poet is capable of.

Set in a near-future Tokyo as a turf battle between street gangs, aka “tribes”, escalates into a large-scale war, this is the other side of Tokyo, a Tokyo of a different color. There, various tribes are living. The SARU from Japan's Musashino, WU-RONZE of Bukuro, and HANDS of Shindyuku... Young men living in the city... these young men of the sordid side of life, a side called "reality," are depicted here.

The report also indicates thusfar that contrary to what is illustrated in the artwork, Sono appears to be casting all Japanese actors instead of Black actors. Developments could take a turn so there is no knowing yet regarding what the cast will look like, but given the source material and the filmmaker involved, the film is turning out to look like a highly gritty, mature, extremely violent action thriller set in a fictionalized Japan that promises all the trimmings of a memorable piece of cinema for cult Japanese film fans. Or at least fans of the manga or the filmmaker, whichever fans choose at this point.

At any rate, the report only speculates that the image shared in the article is of a black characters, although it wasn't confirmed. But now that I think about it, if Sono does decide to cast some Black actors in the film as part of the story, I have a few ideas on who Sono could bring on board. I'm not going to name any names, just yet-I'll save that for one of my off-blog conversations.

For now, I want to know what readers think. Is the Indiewire reporter correct about the ethnicity of the characters in the artwork? And furthermore, who do you want to see cast in a Japanese gangster action film with Black characters? Comment below and share your opinion.

UPDATE (8:27pm EST): Click HERE to read the latest article from Twitch about Sono's casting process.

Some call G.I. Joe: Retaliation a sequel to the 2009 film, G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra. Some call it reboot altogether. I call it a little bit of both, but its definitely a sequel and should be acknowledged as so.

Retaliation summarizes a little bit of the first movie before entering the new bilateral storyline that reunites actor Channing Tatum as Duke, with the character Snake Eyes, played by Ray Park, along with Byung Hun-Lee, Arnold Vosloo and Jonathan Pryce reprising their roles as Storm Shadow, Zartan and The President. The film introduces the new heroes, Roadblock, Lady Jaye, Flint, Jinx and General Joe Colton, played respectively by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Adrienne Palicki, D.J. Cotrona, Elodie Yung and Bruce Willis with new villain, ex-Joe Firefly, played by Ray Stevenson, and Luke Bracey providing the costume performance for Cobra Commander, voiced by Robert Baker, entirely replacing Joseph Gordon-Levitt from the first film.

In the new film, the G.I. Joes are summoned to Pakistan to seize nuclear arms as part of the American government's anti-nuclear weapons campaign-a ruse by Cobra villain Zartan, disguised as the President, only to find themselves targeted and disavowed by their own government and framed for treason. Roadblock, Lady Jaye and Flint survive the massacre, and must find a way to infiltrate the President while investigating the truth behind the attack. Meanwhile, Snake Eyes, staying undercover of darkness, witnesses Storm Shadow and Firefly hatch an elaborate plan to break Cobra Commander out of his high-tech maximum security prison in Germany. With the help of lady ninja Jinx, Snake, whose connection with Storm has stood the test of time through their bitter rivalry since the death of the Hard Master, must seize the opportunity to get to the bottom of COBRA's plans with the government, a mission that will forever define his destiny with Storm. Soon enough, the plot thickens as the world's leaders soon begin to witness the horrible truth behind the faux-President's true intentions and its up to the remaining G.I. Joe to stop Cobra Commander and his army once and for all.

If you haven't seen the movie yet, but saw the first film, directed by Stephen Sommers, then you pretty much know how to connect some of the dots. Plenty of positive reviews are pouring in for this movie, and I have to agree. Granted, it bugged me a little that the entire cast from the first film wasn't brought back, as I would have loved to learn how their story would continue into the sequel, especially with Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander. I was even hoping to see Dennis Quaid return as General Hawk, and it also disappointed me that Destro didn't get a full return from the first movie to add to the line-up of villains to expand the odds against the Joes; it would have been interesting to see the heroes tackle so many villains-I guess director Jon M. Chu made a call though, and it was a pretty smart one since not a lot of people prefer to have so many characters in one action film that the story can't keep up. But I guess after things went full circle with Duke and Rex from the first film, the sequel might as well have left that aspect of the story alone for the sake of making the film as much of a "reboot" as possible.

This movie was a better night for me, especially after my sleepover with A Good Day To Die Hard. The action was good and pretty fast-moving, and the stunts were pretty awesome. D.J. Cotrona handled himself pretty darn well in the role of Flint, as you are likely to see him leap large jumps through hails of gunfire and taking out the baddies one by one. I absolutely dug Adrienne Palicki's performance as Lady Jaye, who knows how to handle her share of the big guns-and yes, she wore the hell out of that red dress. Pryce did a great job in his duel role as both the incommunicado president being held captive by Cobra, where you don't really see much of actor Arnold Vosloo, just remnants of him until the end of the film. Martial arts femme fatale Elodie Yung handled herself very well alongside Ray Park, especially having studied Karate for ten years and performed in films such as Sons Of The Wind: Bangkok Ninjas and District 13: Ultimatum. And as always, Dwayne's latest performance as Roadblock continues to demonstrate his seriousness as a versatile actor.

The fight scenes and stunt sequences were exceptional, thanks to fight coordinators Thomas DuPont and Jong Doo-Hong, with some amazing ninja action with Ray Park harnessing his skills as a martial artist for the screen as Snake Eyes along with Byung Hun-Lee as Storm Shadow. Ray Stevenson and Dwayne Johnson threw down pretty hard in their scenes, even including a little gun-fu in their final fight, which was awesome. Bruce Willis also held his own, playing the pivotal role of Joe Colton, the man whose name and legacy inspires everything that the G.I. Joes stand for.

The one real criticism I have: I gotta say I wasn't too fond of the RZA in this movie as the Blind Master. I wanted to like him in this role, as much as I wanted to like him in The Man With The Iron Fists (that film is another subject I will tackle another day maybe), but it just wasn't for him in my honest opinion, so I will leave it at that.

Collectively, there was nothing really cartoonish, unmanageable or immature about this movie. Some films take on cartoon or toy franchises and end up missing the mark, but Retaliation did what needed to be done. Viewers finally get to be engaged as the new battle lines are drawn between the G.I. Joes and Cobra Commander's axis of evil, and granted, hopefully we will get to see a sequel that sees the Commander get his just desserts. After all, yes, franchises are sweet and all, but aren't you tired of the bad guy getting away? I know I am, Lol.

As a little cherry on top, G.I. Joe: Retaliation was my first ever experience with an IMAX 3D feature film. It was pretty much the same experience I had when watching Dredd 3D, but only on a larger screen. Some of the action can move pretty fast from time to time, so I wasn't always comfortable with the 3D glasses. Still, it was a fun spectacle for the film to share, and for all intents and purposes, well worth the extra nine month wait.

So, there it is. My two cents and not much else to say except go see it. It was a fun ride, and again, I hope there is a sequel, so lets make it happen!

Logan Battles Ninjas, Bullets, Swords And Mortality In The New International Trailer For THE WOLVERINE

With word of the new posters this week comes the action packed international trailer for director James Mangold's new film from 20th Century Fox, The Wolverine. Prior to the botched release of the trailer came increments of teaser footage for the trailer that lasted anywhere from 6 seconds to 20 seconds, which director James Mangold ended up having to apologize for. Not to mention the headache adding to the frustration behind Vine reels in the first place, which to me is a bit of a c***tease in the first place, and so that's partly why I don't blog about Vine clips for trailers when I would rather just put my energy into sharing all the goods.

By the way, if you haven't looked at the mini-teasers yet, then congratulations! You are a master now! :-) The film features actor Hugh Jackman reprising the title role following up the four previous films of the X-Men film franchise, including a special cameo role in the 2012 hit film, X-Men: First Class, directed by Matthew Vaughan, all based on the successful classic comic book arc. The cast also includes Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, veteran international action star Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima and Brian Tee. The film will makes its 2D and 3D theatrical debut this summer on July 26, 2013.

The Wolverine follows Logan as he treks Japan and falls in love with a woman whose hand is already promised to another. When Logan doesn’t back down, her powerful crimelord father summons the Silver Samurai and other deadly threats in the X-Men universe to push Logan’s healing-factor to the limit.

Abrams' latest helmer, Star Wars: Episode VII, and a place in the James Bond franchise.

Fourteen hundred years ago, a tormented soul walked the earth that was neither man nor god. Hercules was the powerful son of the god king Zeus, for this he received nothing but suffering his entire life. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, this dark, world-weary soul turned his back on the gods finding his only solace in bloody battle. Over the years he warmed to the company of six similar souls, their only bond being their love of fighting and presence of death. Now the King of Thrace has hired these mercenaries to train his men to become the greatest army of all time. It is time for this bunch of lost souls to finally have their eyes opened to how far they have fallen when they must train an army to become as ruthless and blood thirsty as their reputation has become.

The Stunt People Cross Knives And Fisticuffs In A Brutal Pre-Viz Clip For A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD

You may recall a little film recently released called A Good Day To Die Hard directed by John Moore and starring Bruce Willis reprising the classic role of New York City cop and reluctant anti-terrorist agent of the world, John McClaine who always happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The film also starred Jai Courtney as his son, who happened to be a government spy working in Russia as dad drops into get him out of trouble.

As it turns out, prior to the release of the film, the creative process kicked in, and certain scenes got cut out of the movie. One scene cut from the movie in particular would have involved a bloody rooftop Krav Maga style knife fight, choreographed by Eric Jacobus and Alvin Hsing, two members of the premiere martial arts action film stunt company, The Stunt People, along with award winning stunt coordinator and fight choreographer J.J. Perry (Haywire, Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing) over at the 8711 Action Design Team stunt gym. Eric and Alvin previously showed their skill and technique in the brutal and bloody knife fight in the independent martial arts action film, Death Grip, a co-production with Action Pact Entertainment, which is probably what made them great candidates to help pre-vizualize what probably would have made a great addition to the film.

Check out both clips below and see for yourself. And click HERE to read my review of Death Grip where you can find the link to purchase the film directly from Eric Jacobus, now available on DVD and Blu-Ray. A Good Day To Die Hard will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray this June.

Rhett Reese And Paul Wernick Speak Out On Deadpool

In a recent interview to promote this week's release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, screenwriting pair Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick invoked a few words on preparation for the script about another comic book adaptation that has been waiting to hit the film set for a while now, Deadpool. Read the following exchange from ComingSoon.net:
CS: Is there any update on "Deadpool"? I know a lot of people are very, very eager for that one.

Reese: There isn't. What has happened so far is that we wrote a script, which we subsequently developed. It actually leaked online, so it exists out there. It's not hard to find, bizarrely. Since then, Fox gave Tim Miller, who's our director and a wonderful guy who is brilliant at what he does, some money and had him go make a test sequence. He directed about a three-minute long test sequence from the movie, all built within a computer. Ryan Reynolds did the motion capture for it. He came in and did the voice for it in an audio session. It is awesome. It is the greatest three minutes.

Wernick: If we showed it to you right now, you would lose yourself.

Reese: So that's out there. Ryan is still committed. Tim is still committed. It's just a question of convincing the powers-that-be that we can make it at a price that's reasonable to them and have it be an R-rated movie that can still make a lot of money. We love it when R-rated movies like "Bridesmaids," "The Hangover," and "Ted" do well.

As reports began developing, director Tim Miller, who is currently working on his next film, Artemis, has been tapped to helm the movie with Reynolds, who has been highly vocal about making the film an R-rated feature, playing the lead. Other than this bit of news, nothing else has been said or mention with regarding any activity about the production. Recent reports, however, indicate the studio heads in charge of production have some cold feet regarding making a movie out of Deadpool. Actor Ryan Renyolds explains in a recent report from Empire:

"I love Deadpool and there is a script that's in development. But it's so, so far into the R-rated zone... it's a nearly NC-17 world and I just don't know if the studio would ever risk their reputation doing it."We've been developing it and we would never wanna do it unless you could it that R-rated way, so... it's sitting there. You could do it for a pittance compared to the modern sort of epic scale superhero movies; it's about a guy who knows he's in a movie and knows he's in a comic book, who is deeply mentally disturbed and hyper violent. And that's tough to get by a studio."

Reports also indicate that the film may address Deadpool's previous appearance in the film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which prettu much undoes previous articles suggesting otherwise.

I don't know about you all but I'm dying to see this three-minute test footage and call it a day, lol.

Stay tuned.

DREDD 2 Is "Dead", But The Shortfilms Live On

And now, hammering the last nail in the coffin is news we can pretty much file in the "No s#!+" category is the word from Charles Webb at MTV Geek according to producer Adi Shankar that the sequel to the 2012 cult fan favorite smash, Dredd 3D is invariably dead. The news comes as several independent filmmakers are making efforts to perform their own take on the vision from Alex Garland and Pete Travis shared in their film released last year from independent company, DNA, and distributed by Lionsgate, starring actor Karl Urban in the title role of the futuristic law enforcer alongside actress Olivia Thirby and the film's villainous femme fatale played by Lena Heady.

Adi Shankar explains:

It’s because the movie totally bombed & R-rated movies are a tough sell to begin with.

But I am working on a Dredd short in the vein of #DirtyLaundry … you’re actually the first person to know about this …

If DREDD becomes a cult hit it will be awesome. Last September was a terrible month … DREDD bombed and then LOOPER became a massive hit a week later!

Nothing against LOOPER! I think Rian Johnson is a genius and I think Joseph Gordon Levitt will become his generation’s Matt Damon. Ram Bergman, the movie’s real producer, is one of the nicest guys in Hollywood.

Dirty Laundry was a shortfilm directed by Phil Joanou (Gridiron Gang, State Of Grace) which debuted at last year's San Diego Comic Con, following up actor Thomas Jane's appearance in the title role of Jonathan Hensleigh's 2004 film, The Punisher, which was reboot of the 1989 film which originally starred Dolph Lundgren. The 2004 film preceded several failed attempts at a sequel which led to another reboot of the franchise, starring Ray Stevenson.

Adi Shankar's latest announcement of a possible Dredd short will join the ranks of (or possibly dwarf upon release) recent efforts to bring the titular character back to life in shortfilm form, along with Oliver Hollingdale at Sunnymeade Films, and Steve and Nick at Sneaky Zebra Films. So stay tuned for further updates. Meantime, check out the Adi Shankar-produced #DirtyLaundry if you haven't seen it yet. Enjoy! (Click HERE if the embed below fails to load).

The first movie, FAVELA, sees Chapman traveling to Brazil to hunt down his sister's killers, in the process discovering an underground world of drugs, prostitution, and police corruption ruled by the Japanese mafia. His origins are unknown. His name and face are a mystery to the world and beyond. A jack of many trades, he holds true to his moral code as a masked superhero and a super agent for T.H.E.M.. He is an international man of mystery whose name is a name that strikes fear and hate in the eyes of his enemies, especially when they (T.H.E.Y.) see Red...literally.

They (T.H.E.Y.) call him....Super7even!

The Adventures Of Super7even is an inspired action comedy webseries that pays ohmage to the classic vigilante, Eurospy and superhero film and television shows of the 1960s and 70s, starring Jerry Kokich and Olivia Dunkley who also co-produce. It also stars Anne Leighton, Terry Shane, Michelle Jubilee Gonzalez, Glenn Takakjian, Andrew Palmer and Glenn and created and directed by veteran actor, stuntman, stunt coordinator, director, producer and New Jersey native, Scott Rhodes (a.k.a. Robert Griffith).

This exciting webseries, going on its fifth season since launching in 2011, takes you on the adventures and misadventures of the super agent known as Superseven, and his ex-wife-turned super sexy sidekick often-reluctant partner, rogue agent Sandra West. The Adventures Of Super7even has all the charm and trimmimgs of a great product for any fan of action who appreciates the classics. Followed by a talented cast and a great script with an even greater vision, the show applies a tried and true formula for entertainment that achieves multiple things. It pays tribute to the successes of past television shows and films that have helped embody the action genre and the sub-genres therein, and it pokes a little fun at itself in the process, incorporating lots of wit quirky comedy with action, suspense, melodrama, gun battles, sexy women, swordfights, bellydancing and more.

All in all, filmmaker Scott Rhodes has come a long way in his career, especially after having endured an injury-related stroke not too recently. He is admired and respected among his colleagues while continuing to perservere with his creativity and his passion for what he loves most, having adapted a classic perspective of film to appeal to modern audiences and continuing to deliver on his potential with a fun and wonderful show.

New Trailer + DVD Release Date For NINJA MASTERS

A martial arts instructor is recruited as a bodyguard for an extremely powerful couple. On her first day of duty, her employers are kidnapped. As she searches for the couple, she is lead by cryptic messages from the kidnappers and into a deadly world of underground fighting. As the culprits put her in the ring, her martial arts skills are tested, and she gets steps closer to freeing her clients. The next opponent that enters her ring will have her facing the ultimate challenge with hopes of getting out of the ring alive!

Lionsgate is releasing the 2009 Hong Kong action film, Ninja Masters (a.k.a. Coweb) on DVD on June 11, 2013. The film stars national Wushu champion and Wuying-level sportswoman Luxia Jiang, along with Sam Lee, Eddie Cheung, Mike Möller, Kane Kosugi and Edison Chen. The film was produced by Joe Ma, with a screenplay by Sunny Chan and directed by veteran Hong Kong actor and stuntman Xin Xin Xiong who also served as action choreographer.

I haven't had the chance to see the film yet, but I have seen trailers and clips...and no ninjas, so it makes me wonder why its being pitched with such a title, with only mention of actor Kane Kosugi in the trailer. Hmm...

Anyway, you can view the trailer below or click HERE if the embed fails to load.

Produced by Nick SImunek, Matthew Binns and Michael Mailer, directed by Ben Ramsey, and starring Michael Jai White, BLOOD & BONE is the story of a mysterious drifter named Isaiah Bone who falls into a mob controlled street fighting ring in the back alleys of Los Angeles.

A post-modern Samurai movie, it blends the dangerous world of gangster controlled underground Mixed Martial Arts fighting, with a visually stunning, action packed plot that will transport audiences into the world before "Ultimate" fighting became mainstream.
Michael Jai White is one of the most talented men in action cinema to date. While being the first African American actor to star in a leading role as a superhero in the movie, Spawn, along with his build, his look and on-screen image formulating White as a foremost leading man in the action industry, he is also a versatile member of his field as a writer, fight choreographer and director, highly respected among stunt professionals and action stars he has worked with throughout his career, including Jean Claude Van-Damme, Steven Seagal, Scott Adkins and Darren Shahlavi to name a few. Having said this, in my opinion, I kinda never did feel that White had the chance to fully showcase his skills in front of the camera the way I hoped he would be allowed to, despite lighting up the screen in many action sequences in several films. But that all changed with the release of the of the 2009 action favorite, Blood And Bone.

The film also stars Nona Gaye, Dante Basco, Dick Anthony Williams, Eammon Walker, Michelle Belegrin, Ron Yuan, Bob Sapp, Julian Sands, Matt Mullins and brothers Nicholas Brody and Cody Benjamin Lee, with special appearances by Kimbo Slice, Gina Carano and Bob Wall. And I can't speak enough about how good this particular movie is, and I might have spoiled my thought process by thinking too hard about how to word it all descriptively enough. But I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, for both its story as well as the action.

As usual, some critics are uber-picky about certain elements of this film, even suggesting that it cared more about action and fights than story development, which I humbly disagree with. I loved the characters, loved the story and loved the grit and the style in which the film incorporates modern-day martial arts in an urban setting. There was never too much or too little of anything delivered in the film, and I instantly shared a voice among many wished, and are still wishing for a sequel.

Speaking of, in a 2012 interview with Crave Online while promoting the Blaxploitation kung fu action thriller, Black Dynamite, White offered the following statement about a sequel in the following exchange:

CraveOnline: "What do we have to do to get a Blood and Bone II?"

Michael Jai White: "Well, there is a sequel that is much better than the original. We just have to find the time to shoot it. It looks like there’s a possibility we may be able to do it by the end of the year."

Director Ben Ramsey and writer Michael Andrews crafted an excellent, gritty and memorable piece of cinema that exhumes all the trimmings of a brilliant martial arts actioner that gave Michael Jai White a platform to showcase pure, raw skill and choreography for the screen. This film definitely needs a sequel, and a lot of time has passed since this film was made, I seriously hope it happens. Blood And Bone left a lot of doors open for viewers to learn about Isaiah Bone's past, and the monastic philosophies that solidify the path of justice he seeks.

Whether it happens or not is still in the air, and whether Michael will get to reprise the role or not is also a mystery; if they do choose another actor, then my mind is open to see how the filmmakers behind it can make it work. But in my opinion, if this film is still a possibility, then the smart money says White will be tapped once again to return.

Currently, Michael Jai White is busy filming the first of his latest action franchise, Favela, which also stars Laila Ali and Neal McDonough, and is directed by none other than Ernie Barbarash (6 Bullets, Assassination Games) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall.
Indiewire brought the scoop on Saturday with a new photo from the set of the upcoming film, along with an official synopsis from Moonstone Entertainment:

The first movie, FAVELA, sees Chapman traveling to Brazil to hunt down his sister's killers, in the process discovering an underground world of drugs, prostitution, and police corruption ruled by the Japanese mafia.

White is also set to reprise the role of Jackson "Jax" Briggs in the upcoming reboot film, Mortal Kombat, directed by Kevin Tancharoen.

Meantime, I highly recommend Blood And Bone as a martial arts action favorite for all fans. You can find the film now at Amazon, iTunes or wherever DVDs, Blu-Rays and streaming videos are sold.

Sure, the film is available online since certain people like to upload them on YouTube and wherever else. But if you actually support the action industry by renting or purchasing these films, it increases the likelihood and budgetary means for sequels and the production of other movies to happen.

Wanna do something cool today? Go and support this movie the right way.

Updates On Police Story 2013

In a recent interview with Kung Fu Magazine, writer Gene Ching had the opportunity to speak to TV/film actor, martial artist and Jackie Chan's own disciple, Jack Tu, about the latest with Jackie Chan's upcoming film, Police Story 2013:

GC: "Why don't you catch our readers up on the film and television projects you've been doing lately."

JT: "Ah, the film I just finished is Jackie Chan's Police Story 2013. In that story, there's not a lot of fighting action. There's lots of shooting, police and military involved in this."

GC: "Now this is not a sequel to the original Police Story franchises. It's a whole new thing, right?"

JT: "It's a lot different than the old one because this one takes place in Beijing in winter. All the cops and all the police are China policemen. It's kind of unique. It's fun because they used the real cops and special forces. All the policemen, special forces and firefighters are all real policemen, special forces and firefighters. I'm one of them, but I play a sniper. My character was fun. At the end, I go in and save him. The story, well, I can't really tell the story. They keep it secret. But it's different. This is about a father and a daughter. And it's about family. It's about the dad going to this club and saving his daughter, and involving a whole gang and police."

Back in September, China Vision Media Group announced Jackie Chan would began filming Police Story 2013 in November. Time has since passed, with Chan beginning post production in February, which was a surprise to a lot of people since not much was said about the film since late last year, except for a questionable teaser poster courtesy of Twitchfilm, followed by an official advanced poster courtesy of director Ding Sheng.

Last month, few details started trickling in about what in store for the new indirect follow up to Jackie Chan's successful Police Story franchise. Impact Online's own Mike Leeder shared a new still photo of Chan with a new haircut for the unique role. Jackie Chan also went on his Weibo blog to express his own thoughts about the character he is playing unlike in his previous Police Story films:

“I’ve played policemen many times before, but I’ve never shot a film which focused on the life of a mainland policeman. So this time, I get the chance to fulfill this kind of role,”

The film is reportedly also said to include, among other things, heavy-handed drama throughout the film, in addition to a cage fighting sequence with an MMA pro-fighter, which is ironic considering back in 2010, the master filmmaker voiced his stance against it. I guess with the success of films like the Wilson Yip film, Flash Point and the upcoming Dante Lam actioner, MMA, it was a matter of time before Chan would choose to apply his creativity in the film when it comes to the sport.

So far, Police Story 2013 cast details also suggest Chan and Tu will be joined by actors Huang Bo (Legend Of The Fist: The Return Of Chen Zhen), Liu Yue (Curse Of The Golden Flower) and Jing Tian who will also be appearing in the upcoming Clarence Fok film, Special Identity.

Stay tuned for further developments.

It's All-Out Korean Gang Warfare In NEW WORLD

As of this weekend, one month after the South Korean premiere of writer/director Park Hoon-jung's latest film, New World , Well Go USA is theatrically distributing the new Korean gangster thriller, starring Lee Jung-jae, Choi Min-shik and Hwang Jung-min and produced by Min-jung Park, Hyun-woo Kim, Jae-Duk Han and Woo-Taek Kim.

MOVIECLIPS recently shared a Red Band clip of the film, to give viewers a taste of the action other than what has been previously seen in trailers. The clip is pure taste of classic Korean cinema with gang warfare, with suited henchmen locked in fisticuffs, vehicular manslaughter and katanas.

The head of the Goldmoon crime syndicate is dead, leaving his top two lieutenants. Seizing the opportunity, the police launch an operation called “New World,” with the perfect weapon. The boss’ right hand man, Ja-sung (LEE Jung-jae, THE THIEVES), has been a deep-cover operative for 8 years, closely watched by handler Police chief Kang (CHOI Min-sik, OLDBOY). With a baby on the way, and living in mortal fear of being exposed as a mole, Ja-sung is torn between his duty and honor as a cop, and the fiercely loyal gang members who will follow him to hell and back.

Using inside information from Ja-sung to damage the relationship between the two feuding contenders, suspicions grow that a traitor lives in their ranks. Ruthless Jung (HWANG Jun-min, BLADES OF BLOOD) escalates the game by hiring hackers to search the police database. As Operation New World closes in, and with the stakes climbing higher and a gangland bloodbath guaranteed among those that remain, Ja-sung makes a final, shocking decision no one could have predicted.

According to a report from City On Fire, the official website for CJ Entertainmemt has announced a limited theatrical release in select cities for the upcoming South Korean Mixed Martial Arts drama, Fists Of Legend. The film is directed by Kang Woo-seok and stars Hwang Jeong-min, Yoo Joon-sang, Lee Yo-won, Yoon Je-moon, Jeong Woong-in and Seong Ji-roo, with action choreography by Korean action impressario Jong Doo-hung (G.I.Joe: Retaliation, City Of Violence).Fists Of Legend (a.k.a. The Legendary Fist), which has no relation to the classic 1994 Jet Li actioner of the same name, is based on an original webtoon about a group of friends, once heralded in their teen years as legends, who must now face each other as rivals in the ultimate prize-fighting competition.

NINJA TURTLES Gets Its Raphael!

Nerd Reactor is reporting via Deadline that actor Alan Ritchson is being picked to play the character Raphael in Jonathan Liebesman's upcoming film, Ninja Turtles, which starts shooting in New York City this April and is slated for theatrical release on June 6, 2014. The news comes a month after co-producer Michael Bay and actress Megan Fox made amends (as well as headlines) with the word that Fox will be joining the official cast as news reporter April O'Neil.

Aliens invade Earth and inadvertently spawn a quartet of mutated reptile warriors, the Ninja Turtles, who rise up against them to defend the world.

Tentatively named "Ninja Turtles", the film is an upcoming reboot of the the classic franchise created by Kevin Eastman, along with Peter Laird who shared his optimism regarding the film's direction in a recent interview with ComingSoon.net:

From everything that I've seen in the ["TMNT"] script and the development and everything they've asked my input on specifically, it's gonna be an awesome, familiar, solid "Turtles" movie. It'll have everything that fans are gonna want and then some.

The writers on board are Josh Appelbaum, Andrew Nemec, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and John Fusco. Producing the film are Galen Walker, Andrew Form, Bradley Fuller and Scott Mednick for Nickelodeon Movies and Platinum Dunes with Denis L. Stewart, Eric J. Crown and Napoleon Smith III serving as executive producers. David Leitch (King Of Fighters, The Mechanic) and Jonathan Eusebio (Never Back Down, Dragonball: Evolution) are said to be directing the action with the 87Eleven stunt team. Paramount Pictures will be handling U.S. distribution.

Ritchson will also be joining actress Jennifer Lawrence in the upcoming film The Hunger Games 2: Catching Fire, which is slated for release on November 22, 2013.

From L to R: Kristen Scott Thomas, Ryan Gosling and Vithaya Pansringarm in "Only God Forgives"

Actor Ryan Gosling recently announced his plans to take a break from acting (I can only assume that his fan base is handling it very well.) And though, I have only seen a few of his films, and haven't had the opportunity to see any of writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn's films yet, Refn's latest film, Only God Forgives has drawn my attention. The film also stars actress Kristen Scott Thomas and actor Vithaya Pansringarm, who is also set to star in Isaac Florentine's next film, Ninja 2.

Ten years ago in Bangkok Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty.

When Julian's brother kills a prostitute, the police reaches out to retired cop Chang, known as the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughters murderer, then restores order by chopping off the man's right hand.

Julian's mother Jenna, the head of a powerful criminal organization, arrives in Bangkok to collect her son's body. She orders Julian to find his killers and raise hell.

Increasingly obsessed with the Angel of Vengeance, Julian challenges him to a boxing match, hoping that by defeating him he might find spiritual release but Chang triumphs. A furious Jenna plots revenge and the stage is set for a bloody journey through betrayal and vengeance towards a final confrontation and the possibility of redemption.

Of course, what draws me is the fact that Ryan Gosling and the director trained several hours a day to prepare for the action, which tells me that the star will eventually showcase some brutal Muay Thai action in the film with at least one or more of the cast members. However, based on what I saw in the teaser footage shown at Cannes last year, I suspect it to have a more heavy-handed dramatic tone rather than Ong Bak-ish action scenes with big stunts. Sometimes less is more, and the synopsis itself sounds like a format for a great crime thriller with some good old-fashioned fist-to-face combat to heighten the drama. And if it all means a good film is on the way, then bring it.

Enjoy your break Ryan, and thanks for leaving a little something for fight fans on the way out.

Meantime, you can check out the international 20-second teaser below, or click HERE if the embed below fails to load.

ONLY GOD FORGIVES will be distributed through Radius-TWC for the U.S., while Lionsgate UK will handle U.K. distribution. Several previous reports have speculated either a March or an April release for the U.S., although neither of those have been confirmed. However, AMC and The Daily Beast have confirmed the film's Cannes premiere in France this May. And remember to follow Nicolas Winding Refn on Twitter to catch more HQ photos from the film.

Stay tuned for details.

New Poster For Dante Lam's MMA

The Asian Cult Cinema Facebook page recently forwarded the latest poster for the upcoming Dante Lam film, MMA. The film was reportedly years in the making for the 47 year old veteran writer, director and filmmaker, whose previous films include Beast Cops, The Twins Effect, Fire Of Conscience and his latest actioner, The Viral Factor, with Nicholas Tse and Jay Chou.

MMA reunites Lam with actor Nick Cheung since working with Tse on their 2010 film, The Stool Pigeon. The film also stars Eddie Peng, (Tai Chi Zero, Cold War) who reportedly endured his own share of injuries throughout the filming process. Bona Film Group is handling domestic distribution for MMA as it nears the end of post-production, according to the latest report City On Fire.

FAI , once a world champion in boxing, escapes to Macau from the loan sharks and unexpectedly encounters QI , a young chap who is determined to win a boxing match. FAI becomes QI's mentor and rediscovers his passion to fight not only in the ring but for his life and the cares.

The film is due out later this year so hopefully we will have more on the cast and crew, and maybe a teaser or a trailer. Stay tuned!

Director Anton Fuqua Tapped For THE EQUALIZER

With actor Russell Crowe, and directors Rupert Wyatt and Nicolas Winding Refn all passing up having anything to do with rebooting The Equalizer, Deadline is reporting that filmmaker Anton Fuqua is being eyed to helm Sony's big screen adaptation of the television series. The film will reunite Fuqua with actor Denzel Washington since their previous work on the 2001 crime drama, Training Day, which earned Washington an Academy Award for Best Actor.

The report also tells that THE EQUALIZER is being described as a loosely based on the hit 1980's television series, that will star Washington as "a solitary, monastic figure who hates injustice and devotes himself to helping people who are being victimized." An earlier report from The Hollywood Reporter indicate that the plot may involve Washington's character taking on the Russian mob as a result of one of his acts of kindness. Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Alex Siskin, Mace Neufeld, Michael Sloan, and Tony Eldridge are producing, with David Bloomfield serving executive producer.

Fuqua's is also best known for one of my own personal favorites, The Replacement Killers, which also starred Mira Sorvino, Danny Trejo and Michael Rooker, and launched lead action star Chow Yun-Fat into international stardom after contributing to such clasic Hong Kong hits as Hard Boiled, The Killer and City On Fire. Fuqua's new film, Olympus Has Fallen, starring Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart and Rick Yune will open in theaters this week on March 22, 2013. You can view the latest RED BAND clip below or click HERE if the embed fails to load.

Stay tuned for further developments on THE EQUALIZER.

Mark Dacascos Is Back In Action In Manila With OPERATION ROGUE

Martial arts action star Mark Dacascos took to his official Facebook fan page a little over twelve hours ago or so to announce his latest new film project, Operation Rogue.

Aloha & Mabuhay from the Philippines! Left Honolulu and arrived in Manila last night. This is my 4th trip here; I love the Filipino people! I am excited to work with director Brian Clyde-Sechler (again) and his crew, Treat Williams, Joe Suba (again), and Sofia Pernas, as well as the excellent local Filipino cast and crew members (for some of them it will be our 2nd, 3rd, and maybe even 4th time working together). Guess what? I play a "good" guy in the film! Who knew?!!:) Will send photos as soon as I get the chance. Aloha, MD

Director Brian Clyde previously worked on the 2006 direct to video military actioner The Hunt For Eagle One starring Mark as a U.S. Marine leading a team on a rescue mission to stop terrorists from launching biological weapons. The film, which also starred actor Joe Suba led to a sequel in which the two also starred, but with director Henry Crum.

Fortunately, the lineage for martial arts cinema doesn't stop here for filmgoers who like Williams, as he is set to star in the upcoming John Stockwell film In The Blood with Danny Trejo and MMA action beauty Gina Carano. And last but not least, fans will get their reprieve when Dacasos appears in the upcoming second season as the character Kung Lao in Mortal Kombat Legacy directed by Kevin Tancharoen.

Not much is known about Operation Rogue or its synopsis, aside from the names listed which inclines this will be an action film. So hopefully we will see an official synopsis in the days and months ahead. For now though, subscribe to Mark's fan page in the aforementioned link above for further updates!
