ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Gets The Reboot Treatment

Deadline is reporting that producer Joel Silver is joining forces between his production company, Silver Pictures, and Studio Canal to revive the classic 1981 post apocalyptic sci-fi action thriller, Escape From New York. The reboot will reportedly be the set-up for a new trilogy, with Silver producing along with Andrew Rona, and executive vice president of Silver Pictures, Alex Heineman serving as executive producer. Currently, the developmental process is undergoing a search for a writer to pen the screenplay, while the word is that actors Gerard Butler (300, Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life), Jeremy Renner (The Bourne Legacy, S.W.A.T.), Tom Hardy (Warrior, This Means War) and Liam Neeson (Darkman, Taken, Unknown) are at the top of the list for Silver's latest re-imagining of the character, Snake Plissken, previously played by actor Kurt Russell.

The original film went on to gross more than $25 million dollars after its theatrical release, with Russell later reprising his role in the sequel, Escape From L.A. in 1996, which flopped at the box office. Both films were directed by versatile filmmaker John Carpenter.

Escape From New York is the latest venture for Joel Silver's production company since the failed reboot attempt several years ago in a time-sensitive deal between New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. with Neal Moritz and Breck Eisner set to produce and direct, respectively. Meanwhile, Butler is currently out promoting his latest film, Olympus Has Fallen. Renner is currently in Boston filming an untitled project with an all-star cast directed by David O. Russell. Tom Hardy is also busy, among other things, slated to appear in the upcoming film, Mad Max: Fury Road, and is also set to star in the classic video game big screen adaptation of Spy Hunter.

Stay tuned for further updates.
